Bonded Apparel Construction
This state-of-the-art film adhesive, developed by Bemis, has been proven in some of the latest designs for bodywear, intimate apparel and technical outerwear. As the name implies, Sewfree eliminates the need for sewing. A garment can be completely glued together with this specially formulated film. Sewfree is a soft, highly elastic, adhesive film designed for apparel applications where stretch and recovery are required. Sewfree adheres to polyester, poly/cotton and blended fabrics. Sewfree can be laminated to your choice of wide width fabric as well as being applied in a tape form to a pre-cut garment.

In addition to the seamless appearance, another advantage that Sewfree offers is weight reduction. Many bonded garments being made with Sewfree weigh considerably less than the previous cut-and-sew designs. In some designs, a 15% reduction in weight was realized when using Sewfree over traditional stitching. Combined this advantage with the fact that continuous adhesive films like Sewfree can bond open face materials like laces, meshes and nets and you can see where future apparel design is headed. Bonded technology is being used in conjunction with existing cut-and-sew operations to create unique designs at less cost. With Sewfree, new fabric and material combinations can now be achieved. Circular knits can now be made truly seamless and the seams in apparel items such as bra cups and on control garments can be eliminated. As you can see from the photos, bonded garments designed today are much more sophisticated compared to the unfinished athletic bra designs that first arrived. This continuous adhesive film technology is superior in many ways to the spray glues used in the past. Bonded garments manufactured with a continuous film can easily survive 50 wash cycles. The challenge for designers today isn't the new technology, rather it is their own imagination on the designs that can be achieved with it.

The advantages to using adhesive films in body wear aren't entirely all design related. With the ability to bond several components together in one step, a reduction in labor is apparent. Not only are there fewer steps in making a bonded garment, there are also fewer components needed to construct some garments.

Sewfree films eliminate bulky stitched seams and can improve the form, fit, and function of any design. Bemis offers the adhesive chemistry, product innovation and industry experience you'll need to design and manufacture a truly seamless garment. For more information contact us.
